Counting Castles

Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany, was the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle at Disneyland.
Where should you go if you want to see the most castles? It depends on how you count! Germany is famous for its thousands of castles across each of its 16 semi-autonomous states. It has more than 20,000!
But the greatest number of castles per square mile is actually found in a country called Wales. It’s one of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom. That makes its status roughly equivalent to German states like Bavaria or Spanish autonomous communities like Aragon. When you compare these smaller regions, Wales wins by a landslide—making it the reigning king of castles!
Use the chart below to find the number of castles per square mile for each of the following regions. Round answers to the nearest thousandth. Record your work and answer on our Numbers in the News answer sheet.
