Penguin Field Trip
The Field Museum
During the pandemic, when Chicago’s Field Museum was closed to human visitors, it opened up to penguins! In late June, Shedd Aquarium penguins Izzy and Darwin took a trip to the Field Museum. There they visited the skeleton of a T. rex named SUE. SUE is one of the largest T. rex specimens ever found.
Seeing the penguins explore the museum and interact with SUE was a memorable experience, says penguin caretaker Jen Becker. “They came running around the corner and kind of just stood and looked,” she says. “I had this moment in my head where I was like, ‘This is crazy. They’re so small and this T. rex is so big.’”
SUE is t feet long. That’s 20 times the height of Magellanic penguins like Izzy and Darwin, who are s feet tall. Write and solve an equation to find t, where s is 2 feet tall. Record your work and answer on our Numbers in the News answer sheet.
