Are you having a hard time finding Sriracha hot sauce? You’re not the only one! Stores can’t keep the popular Thai sauce in stock because of a shortage.
Sriracha is made with garlic and a specific type of red jalapeño pepper, which gives it a unique taste. These peppers are grown in Northern Mexico, which has been in a drought for two years. This year’s harvest was nearly nonexistent, and the company had to halt production in April.
Although Sriracha is in short supply these days, there are plenty of alternatives to choose from, including Gochujang, made from Korean red peppers, and habanero-based Cholula sauce.
It used to cost $33 to buy a case of 23 bottles of Sriracha. Because of the shortage, each case is now $50. How much more is each bottle of Sriracha? Record your work and answer on our Numbers in the News answer sheet.
