Izzy shows off one of her sister’s designs!
Ailbhe (AL-vuh) Keane has always loved decorating her sister Izzy’s wheelchair. Izzy has spina bifida, a condition that has reduced her feeling and movement from her waist down.
“After Ailbhe decorated my wheelchair, I felt joyful and empowered,” says Izzy. They wanted to give other wheelchair users a way to show off their style and have fun with their chairs. That’s why the sisters created Izzy Wheels in 2016. Their company makes and sells cool, colorful wheel covers.
“By choosing their own designs, people can share a piece of their personality with the world,” says Ailbhe.
The rear wheels of a youth wheelchair have a diameter of 20 inches. What’s the area of one wheel? (Hint: Area of a circle = πr2) Record your work and answer on our Numbers in the News answer sheet.
