Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi, Marvel’s newest superhero in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The movie hits theaters on September 3. Scholastic MATH spoke to Liu about what it was like becoming a Marvel superhero and why the role is special for him.
What does the role of Shang-Chi mean to you?
Shang-Chi is the first Asian title superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that’s an important distinction and an important milestone. When the movie was first announced, I was immediately so excited. I didn’t know that I would necessarily get to play that character, but of course I was so encouraged by the fact that it was out there, and the fact that somebody would get to take up that mantle and would get to represent us in that way. I feel like we’ve all waited a long time to see ourselves on screen portrayed in this kind of way. I think it’s a really special moment, and I hope that it’s the first of many.
